Pope Francis grants Priesthood to Women
- The role of women in the church has become a controversial topic in Catholic social thought.
- In this row, recently in January, 2021 Pope Francis has changed church law to explicitly allow women to do more things during Mass, while reaffirming they cannot be priests. The Vatican reserves the priesthood for men.
- The Pope amended the Church law to formalize the common practices in many parts of the world: like women can read the Gospel and serve on the altar as eucharistic ministers.
- Due to several campaigns, the Pope Francis was under pressure to allow women to be deacons — ministers who perform many of the same functions as priests, such as presiding at weddings, baptisms and funerals. Currently, the ministry is reserved for men even though historians say the ministry was performed by women in the early church.
- Expanding the diaconate to include women would give women greater say in the ministry and governance of the church, while also helping address priest shortages in several parts of the world.
- Also, Pope Francis has created a second study commission of experts to study whether women could be deacons, after the first commission was failed to reach a consensus.
- Earlier, Pope Francis named the first woman to a managerial position in the Vatican’s most important office, the Secretariat of State, in January, 2020.
Why Women Can’t Be Priests
- The Church holds that it is not admissible to ordain women to the priesthood, for very fundamental reasons.
- These reasons include: the example recorded in the Sacred Scriptures as in Old Testament, God called only Aaron’s sons to be priests. Women were forbidden to assume such roles.
- Also, Christ choosing his Apostles only from among men; even though he could have chosen his own Mother.
- The constant practice of the Church, which has imitated Christ in choosing only men; therefore the exclusion of women from the priesthood is in accordance with God’s plan for his Church.
- Catholic Church and Women
- The Catholic Church has influenced the status of women in various ways: condemning abortion, divorce, incest, polygamy, and counting the marital infidelity of men as equally sinful to that of women.
- The church holds abortion and contraception to be sinful, recommending only natural birth control methods
